The historic township of Hahndorf was settled in 1839 by Prussian and East German immigrants and is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. It is a popular destination for anyone visiting the Adelaide Hills as its leafy tree lined streets, its beautifully preserved original cottages and a myriad of shops, restaurants and galleries make it a pleasure to stroll the streets.
If you are staying at Tsuchi no Yado Bed and Breakfast it is just a short walk or wheel down to the Main Street. Be sure to try some of the German pastries, breads or smallgoods – they are too good to be missed! There are also many restaurants to choose from if dining out ; modern Australian, German, Hungarian, Chinese, Italian just to name a few. Just out of town you can find the world famous Beerenberg Farm, where you can pick strawberries in season or buy some of their delicious jams and chutneys.
For the art lovers, apart from the several excellent galleries in the Main Street, you can also visit ‘The Cedars’, the home and studio of Hans Heysen, the famous Australian landscape and still life painter.
For more information on these sights or on many of the other attractions in Hahndorf and the surrounding area there is a Hahndorf Visitors Information Centre conveniently located in the Main Street. The helpful volunteer staff is available 7 days a week (except Xmas day) or you can call on (08) 8388 1185 or visit their website
