Official Opening

Official opening celebration

Against the stunning backdrop of a blooming Japanese weeping cherry tree, 80 people of all ages, nationalities and abilities gathered in September to celebrate the official opening of Tsuchi no Yado Bed and Breakfast.

Tsuchi no Yado means Inn of the Earth in Japanese and is the vision of Japanese foot artist and poet Hiroko Kimura. It has taken many years and much effort on the part of many supporters and friends to finally realize this dream and now the friendly home style Bed and Breakfast has opened its doors to people of all cultures and abilities. Guests who require the use of wheelchairs are well catered for and accompanying carers receive generous discounts.

The Director of DIRC (Disability Information and Resource Council) Neil Lillecrapp attended the event commented that “disability is a positive not a negative attribute of the human condition. As such disability is to be celebrated as it contributes to the diversity and uniqueness of humanity.” Tsuchi no Yado he feels is a place that embraces these qualities and congratulated Hiroko on the project and wished it every success.

Japanese classical dancer Noriko Kawabata charmed visitors with two moving dances which was followed by an Indian inspired dance performed by Nihali, Varisha, Nim, Amanda and Julie. The food that followed reflected the same diversity and colour of the dances and was enjoyed enthusiastically as people enjoyed the chance to mingle and share with each other.

Tsuchi no Yado Bed & Breakfast is set in over an acre of beautiful gardens located in the township of Hahndorf. It offers a wonderful opportunity for those who would like to get away from it, all in the comfort and convenience of an accessible environment that won’t break the budget!
